Recent Graduate Seminar

As part of our ongoing dedication to providing high quality resources for continued professional development, Dechra would like to introduce our Endocrinology Programme, tailored specifically to new and recent veterinary graduates

Through significant research and product development Dechra has clearly established itself as an expert in endocrinology. Today we are leading the way in this field, providing effective treatment for pets with endocrine diseases. However, endocrinology can frequently be seen as complicated or overwhelming in first opinion practice, and this can be heightened for recently graduated vets, who may not have dealt with such cases first hand. In order to combat this, Dechra have developed a seminar programme, specifically tailored to groups of new or recent graduate vets. Using interactive case studies and up to date evidence-based medicine as the basis for teaching, delegates will improve their knowledge of Canine Hyperadrenocorticism, Feline Hyperthyroidism, Canine Hypothyroidism and Canine Hypoadrenocorticism. Interactive TurningPoint ® technology is used to bring case studies to life, and enable delegates to relate learning to experiences within the clinic. This is combined with group work and open discussion which encourages reflective practice, in line with the RCVS PDP requirement, and their pilot scheme for future CPD requirements. Our aim is that all delegates leave feeling equipped with the skills and knowledge required to tackle the more challenging medicine cases. A sample agenda for a two day seminar, including learning objectives, is laid out for you, however the length and content can be adapted to suit. The attached programme provides delegates with 11 hours of CPD. Testimonials from delegates who have recently attended the course are also provided for you.

Dechra will cover the cost of speakers for the seminar. Course notes, learning resources and support materials are also provided free of charge. Additional costs (where applicable) are covered by yourselves.

Agenda and Learning Objectives for 2 Day Seminar

Day One—The Highs

Morning Session—Canine Hyperadrenocorticism

Learning Objectives for Session:

Develop a solid understanding of the pathophysiology of hyperadrenocorticism and how it manifests clinically



 Understand the limitations of diagnostic tests for hyperadrenocorticism

 Learn how to use Vetoryl to treat hyperadrenocorticism safely and effectively

 Have the ability to deal with more complex Cushing’s cases including those presenting with multiple endocrinopathies and those which don’t respond to medication as expected  Learn how to use Pre-Vetoryl Cortisol for long term monitoring

Afternoon Session—Feline Hyperthyroidism

Learning Objectives for Session:

 Develop a solid understanding of the pathophysiology of hyperthyroidism, how it manifests clinically and how it is diagnosed  Be able to deal with hyperthyroidism alongside other concurrent disease with a focus on the management of the azotaemic hyperthyroid cat  Gain knowledge of all treatment methods available for feline hyperthyroidism, the advantages and disadvantages of each and where each fits into clinical practice

Day Two —The Lows

Early Morning Session—Canine Hypothyroidism

Learning Objectives for Session:

Develop a solid understanding of the pathophysiology of hypothyroidism and how it manifests clinically



 Understand the range of diagnostic tests for hypothyroidism and how these are used in combination to increase confidence in diagnosis  Discuss the use of trial therapy and expected time scales of clinical response

Mid Morning Session—Personal Case Discussion

A chance to for delegates to discuss an interesting Hyperthyroid, Hypothyroid, Addisonian or Cushingoid case they have been involved in. Would their approach be any different now?

Afternoon Session—Canine Hypoadrenocorticism

Learning Objectives for Session:

Develop a solid understanding of the pathophysiology of hypoadrenocorticism Understand why the variation in clinical signs can create difficulties in diagnosis Discuss how the difficulties in diagnosis can be overcome







 Introduce Zycortal, be able to confidently use it in practice and learn how to best monitor patients on long term treatment
